When Is It Time to Replace Your Down or Polyfill Comforter?

Your comforter is one of the most-used items in your home. Over time, even high-quality ones wear out. Knowing when to replace it can dramatically improve your sleep quality and protect your health.

Clear Signs It’s Time to Replace

  1. Loss of Loft and Fluffiness If your comforter stays flat no matter how much you shake it, the fill has broken down.

  2. Persistent Clumping Hard, lumpy areas that won’t break up.

  3. Recurring Musty or Mildew Odor A smell that returns shortly after cleaning.

  4. Visible Damage Rips, tears, thinning fabric, or leaking feathers.

  5. Worsening Allergy Symptoms Increased sneezing, coughing, or congestion when using the comforter.

  6. Age

    1. Down comforters: Best replaced after 8–12 years.

    2. Polyfill comforters: Usually after 5–8 years.

How to Keep Your Comforter in Good Condition & Prolong Its Life

Proper care can significantly extend the lifespan of your comforter — sometimes by several years.

  • Use a duvet cover and wash it regularly — this is the single best way to protect the comforter from direct contact with body oils, sweat, and dirt.

  • Clean your comforter every 3–6 months (quarterly for households with pets or allergies).

  • Always ensure it is completely dry after cleaning — moisture is the #1 enemy.

  • Use a large-capacity dryer on low heat with tennis balls or wool dryer balls, and shake/fluff frequently.

  • Make sure there is plenty of space for the washer to clean the comforter well. There should be plenty of room when washing or drying the comforter.

  • Avoid excessive heat when drying. Too much heat can damage the natural oils in down feathers, causing them to become brittle, clump together, and lose their insulating loft.

  • Store in a breathable cotton or mesh bag — never plastic.

  • Spot-clean small spills immediately to prevent stains from setting.

  • Rotate and air out your comforter monthly to keep it fresh longer.

For Those Who Don’t Use a Sheet Under the Comforter Many people sleep directly under their comforter. While this feels cozy, it exposes the comforter to more body oils, sweat, dead skin cells, and lotions. This significantly increases the rate of soiling and allergen buildup. If you prefer this style, we recommend cleaning your comforter every 2–3 months instead of quarterly. Consider using a lightweight blanket or flat sheet as a barrier on warmer nights to reduce direct contact and extend its freshness.
