Ancient Beginnings
The desire for clean clothes dates back thousands of years. Ancient civilizations used various methods to remove stains:
The Romans used fuller's earth (a type of clay) and urine (high in ammonia) as cleaning agents.
In ancient Egypt and Babylon, people used a combination of water, alkali salts, and natural oils.
By the Middle Ages in Europe, "fullers" (professional cleaners) used lye, urine, and trampling clothes in vats — an early form of wet cleaning.

The Birth of Modern Dry Cleaning (1800s)
The real breakthrough came in the mid-19th century in France. In 1855, Jean Baptiste Jolly, a Paris tailor, accidentally discovered that kerosene (a petroleum-based solvent) could clean garments without shrinking or damaging them. He opened the first commercial "dry" cleaning business.
In the United States, Thomas L. Jennings (1791–1856), a free Black tailor and inventor in New York City, made a significant contribution. In 1821, Jennings received the first U.S. patent ever awarded to an African American for his invention of a dry-scouring process — an early method of dry cleaning that used solvents to clean delicate fabrics without water. His technique was highly successful and allowed him to build a thriving tailoring business that catered to New York’s elite. Jennings used the profits from his invention to support the abolitionist movement.
The 20th Century: Growth and Challenges
1920s–1940s: Petroleum solvents were replaced by perchloroethylene (perc), a more effective and less flammable solvent. Perc became the industry standard for decades.
Post-WWII Boom: Dry cleaning became mainstream as more people owned fine clothing and suits.
Environmental Concerns: By the late 20th century, perc was recognized as a hazardous air pollutant and potential carcinogen. Many countries began regulating or phasing it out.

Form Finishers – The Finishing Touch A critical part of modern wet cleaning is the use of form finishers (also called body presses or dummy finishers). These are professional steam mannequins that inflate garments with warm air and steam to remove wrinkles and restore their original shape.
Hydrocarbon & Other “Eco-Friendly” Solvents Many cleaners now use hydrocarbon (Green Earth), liquid silicone, or liquid carbon dioxide systems as alternatives to perc. However, because this technology is relatively new, we still don’t fully know the long-term effects on humans — similar to how we didn’t understand the full environmental impact of perc until decades later.
